Richard ‘Dick’ Stewart, 69, of Spearfish, SD, formerly of Aberdeen, SD, died Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Monument Health Spearfish Hospital in Spearfish.

Richard ‘Dick’ Stewart was born January 18, 1956, to Robert & Jacqueline Stewart, the second of five children. He was 18 months younger and older than his siblings. His middle name, Hall, was also his maternal grandfathers. His parents were in the service, so he was born in Germany and thought he was German! Instead of being a Boy Scout, he was in an Indian Group and had a great interest in Indian history and had a collection of Indian artifacts.

Dick attended Monroe Junior High with his sister Becky and her twin. He went to traditional schools off and on until the Adjustment Training Center opened. He was one of the first five clients of the original Adjustment Training Center building by Northern State University. Lack of oxygen at birth caused his disability. He earned his GED. He never gave up because he was very strong willed and stubborn! While at the ATC, he trained a lot of people.

Dick was what the family needed. He was unnaturally kind as a brother. He was very friendly and was compassionate and caring. He had a loud voice and laugh. Dick enjoyed bowling in a league. He worked many years at Herberger’s and was well liked. He was an avid fisherman, having John Kokalas as his fishing partner. They had lots of fish stories!

Another special friend is Nate Thompson, who is NSU’s #1 fan. He was Dick’s roommate and foster brother and was believed “to be a descendant of Sitting Bull.”

In 2019, Dick moved to Spearfish after a long hospital stay to live with his sister Becky and her family. He was the glue that held the family together. He had a special relationship with his great-niece, Elley Mae, who he called Pooh Bear.

Grateful for having shared Dick’s life are siblings: Becky, Bill, and Jim, sister-in-law, Connie Stewart, nieces and nephews, Branden, Ashley and Natalie, Jessica, Jackie and Stacy, Ian and Alec, and Jenny, Bobby, Brian, Ashley and Megan and many other loving grand nieces and nephews.

Preceding Dick in death are his parents Robert & Jacquline Stewart; and brother, Bob Jr.
