Melvin Loebs, 88, of Aberdeen, SD, died Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Melvin was born September 23, 1937, to Edwin and Emgard (Mund) Loebs in Leola, SD. He attended country school and began farming with his father at an early age. Later in life, he worked for a farmer for a short time before working for Martin Edwards for several years as a mechanic. In 1980, he began working for Northern State University as a plumber. He remained there for 22 years, retiring on October 1, 2002.

On September 24, 1966, Melvin married Helen Howell. Together they made their home in Aberdeen, where they raised their two children, Sheila and John. Melvin and Helen did almost everything together. They enjoyed bike rides, walks, and spending time with friends over coffee. They volunteered at the Salvation Army and were active in their church. They were members of Calvary Baptist Church for 50 years, and after it closed, they began attending Northern Plains Baptist Church.

Melvin was a fun-loving man who enjoyed spending time outside working in the yard, riding his lawn mower, and collecting knickknacks for his yard. He was a former member of The Friendship Singers and was also a member of the Senior Center. Melvin was very sociable and pleasant to be around.

During his final days here on earth, he was asked what brought him joy. His response was simple: being married to his wife.

Grateful for having shared Melvin’s life are his wife of 60 years, Helen Loebs; children, Sheila Loebs-Bustamante and John (Melissa) Loebs; grandchildren, Emma Loebs, Benjamin Loebs, and Timothy Bustamante; and brother, Leslie (Darlene) Loebs.

Preceding Melvin in death are his parents, Edwin and Emgard Loebs; sister, Sharlene (Darrel) Chapman; and son-in-law, Art Bustamante.

Melvin’s faith was central to his life, and he is now at peace with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
