Mamie L. Stugelmeyer, 102, of Aberdeen, SD, died Thursday, February 29, Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Mamie L. Merkel was born on December 18, 1921, on her family’s farm near Ashley, ND, to Matt and Ottillia (Wagemann) Merkel. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school in McPherson County. After school, she worked on the family farm.

On September 29, 1940, Mamie was united in marriage to Albert F. Stugelmeyer, at Ashley, ND. They lived and farmed at Ashley, ND. In October 1952, they sold the farm and moved to Aberdeen. She worked in food service for many years in various restaurants, bakeries, and schools. She attended food service school in Brookings, SD. Mamie retired as head cook for the SD School for the Visually Impaired after 21 years of service. Mr. Stugelmeyer died on June 10, 1990. Mamie continued to make Aberdeen her home and later moved to Davis Court, Nano Nagle Village and finally to Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Mamie was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church since 1945 until she became unable to attend in 2022, making her the longest living member. She was part of an Altar Circle and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was also a member of the Aberdeen Area Senior Citizens Center. Mamie loved dancing and was active in the Belles and Beaux Square Dancing Club and enjoyed line dancing. She was talented at embroidery, enjoyed gardening, baking and walking.

Grateful for having shared Mamie’s life are children: Monica Stugelmeyer, Lavonne (Bob) Rankin, and Fred (Connie) Stugelmeyer; her brother LeRoy Merkel; sixteen grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding Mamie in death are her parents: Ottillia and Matt Merkel; her husband: Albert Stugelmeyer; two daughters: Norma Johnson and Dianne Dallyn; grandson: Luke Rankin; great-great-granddaughter: Dakota Johnson; and her sisters: Ada Schwartz and Esther Hartman.
