Evelyn Rose Herther, age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on November 12, 2025, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Born on September 4, 1929, to Ernest and Hulda (Boekelheide) Steger, Ev grew up on the family farm near Mansfield, S.D. She was lovingly known as "Tootsie," a nickname that followed her throughout her life. In her youth, she enjoyed being outdoors, running a team of horses, and assisting with daily chores. She attended a one room country school through 8th grade and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1947. Ev also attended Northern State College.

Evelyn married Charles Herther in 1949. Together, they established, owned and operated Aberdeen Equipment Company until 1986, when two of their sons took over. She was known for her strong work ethic and friendly nature. Together, they raised three sons. A devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Evelyn lived her faith through service and kindness. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a member of PEO Chapter BX, Ev cherished her many friendships through these organizations.

Ev had a quick wit and good sense of humor, which was required living with her husband, Charles, and three active sons. An avid tennis and bridge player, she also took great joy in challenging family members to Scrabble games, which she usually won. Evelyn's garden was her pride and joy, and she also enjoyed reading books, the newspaper and magazines.

Evelyn and Charles loved to travel, taking trips all over the world. Their favorite destination was Hawaii, which they visited annually for over 20 years. She admitted that she was not the best cook, and her grilled cheese sandwiches were known for being "extra crispy.” Her rhubarb pies were unmatched in flavor and loved by all. She made life bigger and better for all she knew.

Evelyn was known for her sweet spirit, deep faith and love for her family, especially her grandchildren, who brought her endless pride and joy. She leaves behind a legacy of gentleness, humor and unwavering love that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

The family is grateful to Kelly Herther for the special care and attention she provided for Evelyn.

She is survived by her sons: Craig ( Patty) Herther of Dubuque, IA, Brad (Jayne) Herther of Aberdeen, SD, Steve (Kelly) Herther of Aberdeen, SD; 7 grandchildren: Nicole (Brady) Powers, Michael Herther, Brian (Morgan) Herther, Joe (Nyssa) Herther, Ben Herther, Stephanie Herther, Allison (Jack) McKinney, and 12 great- grandchildren.
