David L. Lynn, 91, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away Saturday, February 24, 2024.

David Lavern Lynn was born David Lavern Fish in Paris, South Dakota on January 20th, 1933, to Raymond Sr. Fish and Mildred (Plocek) Fish. His siblings were Ray Jr., Bernice, Bonnie, Hattie, and Shirley. He graduated from Lemmon High School, class of 1951.

As a young man, David was instrumental in constructing the Fort Randall, Oahe, and Shadehill dams, hauling dirt from the trenches in a massive Euclid truck.

In 1953, Dave was drafted into the army, where he was chosen to be a driver for a one-star general. A couple years later, they offered him the chance to attend college for free. He quickly jumped at the opportunity to continue his studies, and graduated from Northern State University, (formerly--Northern State Teachers College,) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Dave met Betty Rieger while attending school and enjoyed visiting her at the malt counter in Woolworth’s, where she worked. After obtaining his degree, Dave decided to go into Social Work, and spent 37 years with the Department of Social Services; providing support to individuals living on reservations. His work brought him and Betty to Ipswich and Sisseton, before landing them in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where they lived for the rest of their lives.

Dave and Betty Lynn were married on August 18th, 1957, at Plymouth Congregational Church, where he was a member for over 6 decades. Together, they had two sons--Michael David Lynn, and Terry Alan Lynn, whom they treasured.

A helper by nature, as well as an avid storyteller, Dave easily befriended those around him because of his warmth, and enthusiasm for life. He loved people and enjoyed making them happy.

Dave adored being outside and was often found tending flowers or watering the garden. He was happiest with a dog by his side and had a soft spot for taking in stray animals. An involved member of the community, Dave frequented as many events as were offered; his favorite being his granddaughter's concerts and recitals. He was a proud member of the Elks Lodge for decades, holding numerous leadership positions, including Exalted Ruler.

Spending time with family, particularly his beloved granddaughters, was what he cherished most. He loved going camping together at the Fort Sisseton Historical Festival every year, where he served as their personal tour guide-the best in the business.

David Lavern Lynn passed away on February 24th, 2024, at 91 years old. A man of many treasured traditions, and someone who wasn't afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve, Dave will be missed dearly by family and friends for his laugh, his hugs, and most of all--his unwavering love. David Lavern Lynn is succeeded in death by parents Raymond Sr. and Mildred Fish, wife Betty Lynn, brother Ray Jr., sister Bernice Meggers, sister Shirley Fish, and son Terry Lynn.

He is survived by sister Bonnie (Maynard) Oliver, sister Hattie Meyer, son Mike (Lindsey Voeltz), granddaughters Laci (Derrick) Jones, and Mikayla Lynn, and four great-grandchildren.
