Carter Wayne Ness was born on April 9, 1957, in Aberdeen, SD, to Paul G. and Donna (Hammer) Ness. He was raised in Aberdeen, where he attended public schools and graduated from Central High School in 1976. He pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science following his high school education. Carter began his working life following in his father's footsteps, spending some time with the Milwaukee railroad. He eventually moved on to open his own IT computer business, which he owned and operated for many years.

Carter had a deep passion for music, particularly enjoying guitars and amplifiers. In his younger years, he was part of the Firehouse Band, which showcased his musical talents. Carter loved dogs and always had one or two at his side. He also had an interest in firearms, participating actively in various shooting clubs. He was involved with the Aberdeen Gun Club, where he supported many youth shooting events, as well as with the Brown County Sportsman Club and the Great Plains Outdoorsmen's Club.

In his later years, Carter forged a special bond with his son, Jeremy Poirier. Their relationship blossomed over shared interests, especially their love of guns, which included many enjoyable hours reloading ammo together. Carter cherished the opportunity to connect with his son and appreciated the time they spent together.

Carter leaves behind his son, Jeremy (Tiffany) Poirier, and grandkids Taya and Jace.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Donna Ness, and his brother, Jason Ness, who passed away due to injuries sustained in a car accident in 1984.
