Carol Joan Dormady (Schumacher), 70, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Bethesda Home in Aberdeen.

Carol Joan Schumacher was born October 25, 1952, to Fritz and Lois (Halpin) Schumacher in Aberdeen.  Carol grew up in Aberdeen and lived at 215 12th Ave. NE, later moving to 823 2nd Ave. NE.  She attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Roncalli High School.  She then went on to attend Northern State College graduating with a teaching degree.

Following graduation, Carol married Larry Dormady at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Aberdeen.  Carol began her career teaching elementary school and later she and Larry managed group homes for disabled individuals.  The couple moved to Mission, SD in 1984 where she taught, and Larry was the school counselor.  Unfortunately, Larry passed away on October 15, 1999, at the age of forty-eight.

Carol developed chronic kidney disease and began dialysis beginning in 1999.   She decided to move back to Aberdeen to be closer to her family. Her cousin Ann Schumacher Lacher graciously donated a kidney to Carol on June 5, 2001.  This gift gave Carol many years that she may have not had.

Carol was blessed with many friends.  She became an ambassador for kidney health and managing chronic kidney disease.  Carol enjoyed working in the church, volunteering as a hospice volunteer, and was honored by the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen for her ten years of service as a Presentation Cojourner.

Carol’s friends and family remember her most for her sense of humor, infectious smile, caring attitude, and love for her family and friends.

Grateful for having shared Carol’s life are her two brothers Tom (Leslie) Schumacher of Tacoma WA, and Roger (Cheri) of Sioux Falls, SD, nine nephews; and many cousins.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband Larry, her parents Fritz and Lois, and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
