Bernard Artz, 89, of Leola, SD, passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at Avantara Redfield.

Bernard “Sonny” John Artz was born on the family farm west of Bowdle, SD, on July 28, 1936, to John Jacob and Elizabeth Agatha (Hoppe) Artz. He attended country schools and graduated from Bowdle High School in 1957. Following graduation, Sonny proudly served in the United States Navy until his honorable discharge in 1962, after which he attended business college in Jacksonville, FL.

After returning to South Dakota, Sonny made his home in Aberdeen, where he worked as a manager for Aberdeen Serve All Towel and Linen Company for many years. Later, he founded and operated his own linen supply company.

Sonny shared his talents through music ministry, performing in nursing homes and churches, and also served part-time as a pastor for several local congregations.

Sonny also enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. He was an avid bowler and a lifetime member of the VFW. He loved spending time at the Leola Senior Center, where he found joy in conversation and friendship over a good meal.

Sonny will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose faith, generosity, and love for life touched everyone he met.

Grateful to have shared his life are his children: Bernard J. “John” Artz of Aberdeen, SD, Kevin Artz, Duane Artz of Leola, SD, and Karen (Clifford) Lilly of Leola, SD; brother, John (Janice) Artz of Winthrop, MN; sisters, Betty (Dennis) Doerr of Loveland, CO, and Frances Aldinger of Aberdeen, SD; seven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Connie; three sisters; and one great-grandson.
