Roger Allen Marko, 80, Westport, died March 20, 2019, surrounded by family.

Roger was born October 13, 1938, in Westport, S.D., to William and Margaret (Mullner) Marko. He attended Westport High School and earned a general education diploma.

He began playing the accordion when he was 12, learning the basics from his brother, Don, and later taking more formal lessons. Roger played for his first dance with Don, then played for weddings until 1959 when he joined Bob’s Trio.

Following a year with the trio, Roger began the New Happy Dutchman Band. In 1969, he organized The Starliters Band and with this group he has performed in most cities in the South Dakota area.

Roger’s love and passion for the accordion would induct him into The Dakota Musicians Association’s Hall of Fame. The D.M.A is organized to honor and pay tribute to musicians or people involved in the art of music.

Roger married his childhood friend and the love of his life, Darlys Nelson, June 27th, 1961. They then made their home in rural Westport where he continued his passion for farming and ranching.

In 1973, with the help of a neighbor, Roger built his own hay hauler, which ignited his career as a business owner in custom hay hauling throughout the Midwest and Canada.

Roger had a passion for conversation and coffee which allowed him to build many friendships. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Westport and served on the Township Board.

Roger is survived by his wife of 57 years, Darlys; three sisters; two brothers; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews (too many to mention).

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
