Melvin Fischer, 86, Aberdeen, SD, died Sunday, August 29, at his home in Aberdeen.

Melvin Fischer was born on May 4, 1935, to Art and Ella (Wagner) Fischer in Artas, SD. He attended country school and grew up on the family farm near Eureka, SD. On February 4, 1957, he joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was Honorably Discharged on January 31, 1963. In 2019, He was chosen to join the Midwest Honor Flight. This remained a highlight throughout the rest of his life.

On April 12, 1959, Melvin married Shirley Bader at the Eureka Congregational Church. They lived in Miller, SD and Eureka for several years before moving to Aberdeen. Together, they enjoyed camping and traveling. Throughout his life, Melvin worked in road construction, as a plumber, and maintenance at Dakota Midland before retiring. After retirement, Melvin and Shirley spent seven winters in Arizona before they had to quit because of health reasons.

Melvin enjoyed fishing, playing cards and putting together puzzles. He liked dancing and often watched Mollie B Polka Party. He also enjoyed watching rodeos. He was a people person and liked to visit. He was devoted to taking care of Shirley when he needed to as well as friends in the Carlyle Apartments.

Grateful for having shared Melvin’s life are his children: Bruce (Kristi) Fischer, Mark (Cindy) Fischer, and Todd (Esther) Fischer; grandchildren: Justin (Bailey) Fischer, Megan (Jordon) Dunham, Brady Fischer, Christopher Grey, and Amanda (Carson) Hardie; great-grandchildren: Karter Hedges, Marshall Dunham, Zoey Dunham, Benson Beck, and Gannon Hardie; and sisters: Verna Schaeffer and Priscilla Neuhardt; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Melvin in death are his wife, Shirley Fischer; parents, Art and Ella Fischer, grandchildren, Tyler Fischer and Michael Fischer; siblings: Ron Fischer, Vernald Fischer; and brothers-in-law, Milbert Schaeffer and Milbert Neuhardt.
