Died on: July 20, 2020

Joetta, age 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2020 in the home of a family member with Hospice Care.

Joetta Alta Melius was born November 20, 1928 in Faulk County near Faulkton, SD to William and Julia (Arnedsee) Melius. She loved the outdoors and growing up on the family farm with eight brothers and seven sisters. She attended Melius Country School in Faulk County and then attended and graduated from Faulkton High School.

On June 8, 1948, Joetta married Siegfried William Swanhorst at Wecota Immanual Lutheran Church. They moved to the family farm near Cresbard, SD where they continued to live for forty-four years. In 1982 they began spending the winter months in Arizona. In 1991 they moved into Cresbard and continued spending winters in Arizona. After Siegfried’s death in 2001, Joetta continued to make Cresbard her home until moving to Davis Court Retirement in Aberdeen, SD in 2009.

As a member of Concordia Lutheran Church of Cresbard she was active in Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was also an extension club member and a Charter Member of the Red Hat Society of Cresbard. She loved entertaining family and friends and will be remembered for her infamous sour cream/raisin pie. She enjoyed golfing, playing cards, especially bridge. The tradition of Nertz, a card game enjoyed at most family gatherings will continue on, albeit without Joetta’s “ever changing creative approach.” She was the core of the family and especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared Joetta’s life are her eight children: Brenda (Lee) Bruns, Sioux Falls, Judy (Greg) Gabler, Longmont, CO, Daryl Swanhorst, Aberdeen, Jane (Tracy Ringolsby) Swanhorst, Cheyenne, WY, Renee (Marv Olson) Swanhorst, Redfield, Marsha Swanhorst (Rick Robertson), Benett, CO, Mary Zimmerman, Bennett, CO and Camille (Darwin) Tuscherer, Cresbard, twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren, six step grandchildren, ten step great-grandchildren and three step great-great-grandchildren, brothers -in-law, David (Hedi) Swanhorst and Bob (Trish) Swanhorst, sisters-in-law, Donna Swanhorst and Karen Swanhorst, many nieces and nephews.
