Howard “Swede” Duane Nelson, 84, Aberdeen, formerly of Mansfield, SD, died Sunday, February 14, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Howard “Swede” Nelson was born July 16, 1931 to Thora (Hanson) and Albert Nelson in Aberdeen. He attended Sunshine Country School and graduated in 1949 from Warner High School. When Howard was 13 his father passed away. With his brothers away at war, Howard had to take over the farm.

Howard was united in marriage to Aldene Shilman in 1950 and they made their home on the Richard Shilman family farm west of Warner. Howard loved farming and was a proud man.

Howard was active in church council, Warner school board, and NFO. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Aberdeen. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Warner.

Howard enjoyed playing cards, fishing, bowling and watching his son Gregg race at the Brown County Speedway and surrounding tracks. He loved to dance and was very good at doing so. Howard took pride in raising his Suffolk sheep and watching his children show them.

Howard is survived by his children: Vicki (Larry) Breidenbach, Sr., Warner, Garlan Nelson, Aberdeen, Stan (Katherine Clifton) Nelson, San Diego, CA, and Gregg (Deanna) Nelson, Warner; grandchildren: Larry Breidenbach Jr., Trevor Nelson, Trissa Nelson and Brielle Nelson; step grandchildren Ronnie Greer and Meghan Greer; great-granddaughter Madeline Breidenbach; sister Dorothy Schwab; and his special friend, Marlene Hoines.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, parents, sister Doris and brothers Clarence and Amos.

We love you Dad and we will miss you deeply. Thank you for “always” being there for all of us. You gave mom a special Valentine this year….You. Rest in peace!!
