Harry L. Swearingen, age 81, of Aberdeen, SD, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at his residence.

Harry L. Swearingen, the son of Harry and Edith (Engel) Swearingen, was born at Claremont, SD, on November 18, 1934. He attended SD public school Marshal County, and was drafted into the United States Army as a mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1959. Afterwards, he worked on several farms. He moved to Aberdeen in 1960, and got a job as a welder.

On March 5, 1961 Harry married Rose Crouch at Zion Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. The couple made their home in Aberdeen. Harry worked for E.C. Montgomery as a painter for ten years. He took over the business and worked for 20 years as a paint contractor and retired in 1997.

Harry was a member of the Brown County Old Time Tractor Pullers. He excelled at woodworking, and made many special projects for family members. He also enjoyed reading, being on the computer, researching family genealogy, and fishing. Harry was a hardworking man, but he still made time for his family. He would tell stories to anyone that would listen. He loved reunions, and enjoyed having his family over to his house for family meals on holidays and birthdays.

Grateful for having shared Harry’s life are his wife of 54 years, Rose; three sons: Steven R. Swearingen, Aberdeen; Harry A. Swearingen, Denver, CO, and Matt (Monica) Swearingen, Stratford, SD; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two brothers: Clarence (Thelma) Swearingen, and Allen Swearingen; four sisters: Clara Kimball, Lou Enderson, Ella (Harley) Bagley, and Pat Hight.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Harry and Edith; one great-grandson, Gabriel; one brother, Stanley; two nieces and three nephews.
