Florence Schock

Florence Schock
Date of Birth: April 25, 1922
Died on: April 18, 2019

Florence Schock, 96, Aberdeen, died Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Florence, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Hieb) Mehlhaff was born on April 25, 1922 on the family farm near Hillsview, SD. The family relocated to rural Hosmer where she attended a one-room school. She liked the Hosmer farm except for the rocks, rocks, and more rocks.

She married John J. Schock on October 28, 1944 in Leola, SD. They celebrated the birth of three children: Stanley, Gwen, and Arnie. When her children got older, she worked at the Leola Hospital, and then the Gamble store for 11 years. After retiring, she enjoyed her card-playing friends. Her perfectionism was obvious in her needlework, especially a quilt that won the blue ribbon at a craft fair which she later gifted to her granddaughter Melanie at her wedding. Melanie’s daughter Katrina will be the quilt’s next guardian.

Florence, of German-Russian heritage, born a child of the prairie, was content with celebrating activities associated with the rhythm of the seasons. She was unpretentious, independent, never a follower, proud to be heralded “hard working” and loved and supported her family through calm and turbulence. She was loyal and thankful – twice she traveled to North Carolina to visit the man who shared a foxhole with her brother Irvin when he was killed in WW II. She forever mourned Irvin and saved every war letter he sent her in an old shoebox held together with yellowed string. She gifted the letters to her daughter for safe keeping.

Florence was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran, Leola where she taught Sunday School and later St. Paul’s Lutheran, Aberdeen. After moving to Aberdeen in 2011, she resided at Primrose, then an apartment with home care services, and lastly Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Grateful for having shared Florence’s life are her children: Gwen (Phil) Cowherd; and Arnie (Kim) Schock. Grandchildren: Todd Schock, Roxana (Jerome) Lapka, Alexander Cowherd, Melanie Dulak, Manda (Eric) Riebel, Shanda (Bruce) Gaunt, Stacey (Trevor) Hone, and Jenny (Brandon) Miller.
