Ellie M. Poe

Ellie M. Poe
Date of Birth: August 30, 1924
Died on: July 04, 2020

Ellie M. Poe, 95, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Aberdeen, SD, died Saturday, July 4, 2020, at Ava’s House, Sioux Falls, SD.

Ellie Margaret Schliebe was born August 30, 1924, to Julius and Minna (Franz) Schliebe in Columbia, SD. She grew up and attended school in Columbia, SD, graduating from Columbia High School in 1942. Ellie then attended Aberdeen School of Commerce for two years earning a business degree. For a short time, Ellie hosted a radio show, “Listen, Ladies”, about household hints for women on KABR radio in Aberdeen.

On June 6, 1947, Ellie was united in marriage to Howard A. Poe in Aberdeen. They made their home there. Ellie began work at the Bureau of Indian Affairs and worked as a voucher examiner there until retiring at the age of 62. After Howard passed away on May 4, 1995, Ellie continued to live in Aberdeen until moving to Sioux Falls in November of 2006.

Ellie was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls and was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church when she was living in Aberdeen. She volunteered at her church and at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen. Ellie enjoyed walking and playing golf with her sister-in-law, June Schliebe. She most enjoyed visits from her children and grandchildren. Ellie had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She worked outside of the home most of her life, but her first priority was always her family. She never failed to make Christmas at her home special for the whole family, even including family friends. The irony does not escape her family that she passed away on the Fourth of July, as she was our feisty little firecracker. There are so many more memories to share, but there would never be enough space to contain them. She will be deeply missed and always loved by those who knew her best.

Grateful for having shared Ellie’s life are her children Vikki (Arlo) Fossum, Joannie (Dan) Holdhusen, Lana (Doug) Berkland, Bruce (Renee) Poe, Gregg (Melissa Clausing) Poe and Mark (Megan) Poe; grandchildren Richard (Brittany) Fossum, Maria (John) Manak, Steven (Treasa) Fossum, Andy (Sukanya) Fossum, Brent (Meg) Fossum, Ryan Holdhusen, Brad (Kristin) Holdhusen, Stephanie (Adam) Hofmaier, Amanda (Zach) Jensen, Riley (Karla) Poe, Alex Poe, Erin (Keith) Rodgers, Erik (Sarah) Poe and Clara Poe; Ellie’s great-grandchildren Reed, Avery, Megan and Micah Fossum, Justin and Jacob Manak, Taylor and Sydney Fossum, Emma, Chris, Kaden, Isabel and Ellie Fossum, Sam, Jacob, Max and Lauren Holdhusen, Sophie, Cole and Will Hofmaier, Amari Poe, Jack and Cole Rodgers, Emma, Audrey and Merritt Poe and Boston, McCoy, Wrenley and Mila Jensen.

Ellie was preceded in death by her husband Howard, her parents, brothers John, Herb and Kurt Schliebe, sister Lydia Ronnekamp, baby brother and sister Heinz and Ericka, and daughter-in-law, Kathy Poe.

We the children of the Vic Oltman family send our condolences. We knew Ellie through her brother Herb Schliebe. This was a generation of people who loved America and believed and fought for the freedom and values of America. They worked hard, took care of neighbors, and were grounded in God and family. What a legacy!
