Carol Nelson

Carol Nelson
Date of Birth: August 28, 1929
Died on: September 20, 2021

Carol Nelson, 92, of Aberdeen, SD, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 20, 2021.

Carol was born on August 26, 1929, to Fred and Ruth LaCrosse in Lorraine, ND. She was the fourth child of a family that eventually welcomed a total of 10 children. The family farm was always full of laughter, love and song. As a child, Carol left the family farm for a few years and lived with her aunt and uncle in Minneapolis. She remembered that time fondly for all the new things she got to experience.

She headed back to Lorraine to finish out her schooling and then headed to Fargo, ND, to attend business school. It was there she met the love of her life, Edsel Nelson. Carol often recalled their courtship days and the strict curfews she had living at the YWCA in Fargo.

Soon they were married and began their travels. Edsel’s job as an engineer took them to Iowa, Texas, New York, New Mexico and North Dakota. They eventually landed in Aberdeen, the place they called home for their remaining years.

Carol stayed home to raise her four children, but always found time to give back to the community. She was a leader in the League of Women Voters, even attending a national convention in San Francisco. She was active in her church, singing in the choir and serving in a women’s circle. She was also involved in her kid’s activities, including the PTA.

Carol was probably the original Aberdeen hockey mom as the outdoor rink was across the street from her house and the young skaters used the Nelson home as a warming house! She and Edsel were very involved in starting the Aberdeen Hockey Association.

During the summers, Carol and Edsel spent much of their time at their lake cabin in Minnesota. It was the gathering place for family and friends and Carol made everyone feel welcome. After the kids were gone, Carol didn’t slow down. She was a proud member of the Red Hat Society and the Sunshine Singers. Her group sang at small town festivals and even at the State Capitol during the Christmas season. Carol was always the first to laugh, the first to sing and the first one ready for some fun.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew who her, but especially by her four children, eight grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Her children are: Jeanene (Jim) Cotherman, Cranberry, PA; Ruth (Jerry) Backous, Lisbon, ND; Dave (Mary) Nelson, Pierre, SD, and Alan (Brenda) Nelson, Oronoco, MN; grandchildren: Jeremey (Becky) Backous, Craig (Adriana) Backous, Jeff (Megan) Backous, Charlie (Aimee) Cotherman, Andy (Jenna) Cotherman, Tanner (Kassey) Nelson, Stephanie Nelson and Cole Nelson; sisters Margie Johnston and Shirley Baker.

Ready to welcome her to her eternal home are husband, Edsel Nelson; parents Fred and Ruth LaCrosse, brother Swede LaCrosse; sisters Vivian Helming, Genevieve Rollag, Mary Lou Maylor, Donna Bryant, Diana Stoops, and infant sister Judy Jo LaCrosse
