Eventually, he returned home to take over the family farm in Merricourt where he focused on raising Hereford cattle of which he was very proud. Calving season was special. He even brought a few calves into their home’s bathtub during extreme cold.

On October 6, 1973 August married Matilda “Tillie” Opp in Aberdeen. After their marriage, he continued ranching.  August and Tillie also enjoyed traveling the US and Europe. In 2000 he retired and moved into Ellendale. On April 17, 2017 August moved to Avera Mother Joseph Manor where he resided until his death.
