Date of Birth: April 29, 1934
Died on: August 01, 2020

Milbert W. Schaffer, 86, Aberdeen, SD, died Saturday, August 1, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Milbert W. Schaffer was born April 29, 1934, to August and Martha (Zelmer) Schaffer in Long Lake, SD. He grew up on the family farm in the Long Lake area and attended country school.

On November 6, 1954, Milbert married Verna Fischer in Eureka, SD, and they moved to Aberdeen that same year. In the first 15 years of their nearly 66 years of marriage, they had two children, Sharon and Shawn.

Milbert drove gravel truck, where he worked on building roads in and around the Black Hills area. Milbert cleaned various businesses in Aberdeen. He worked for Loel Lust doing auto-body work for 17 years. He then built and operated his own body shop for 13 years. After retiring from the auto-body repair industry, he worked doing overnight maintenance for Wal-Mart. He started at the original Aberdeen Wal-Mart when it first opened and stayed with the company in the move to the current Super Wal-Mart location. He continued to work for the company until he retired in 2009.

When the children were young, the family enjoyed camping and traveling for summer vacations to destinations like the Grato of Redemption in Westbend, IA, Okoboji, Colorado and especially enjoyed a trip to the Peace Gardens in North Dakota and Canada. Milbert liked creating small collections of knick-knacks and collecting antiques from various antique shops. He enjoyed music, especially Bluegrass, older Country and Western, and “Old-time” music. He looked forward to watching “Polka Party” and game shows. Milbert was a “Chevy man” and always liked to have a nice vehicle. He was most recently proud of his 2003 black Chevy pickup that he lovingly referred to as “Blacky.”

Grateful for having shared Milbert’s life are his wife: Verna Schaffer, Aberdeen; his children: Sharon (Allen) Mohr, Redfield, SD, and Shawn (Jessica) Schaffer, Aberdeen; his grandchildren: Michael (Jennifer) Mohr, Christopher Mohr, Ashley (Tony) Zerr, Averie, Trinity and Hailey Schaffer; great-grandchildren: Kendal Witham, Cory, Britney and Alexandra Enoksen, and Mickenzie, Justin, Rylie Mohr, Tygen and Taylarae Mohr, and Lydia Hayes, Damion Hallsted, Kingston, Ziah and Cassidy Zerr; two great-great-grandchildren: Jasper and Paisley Mohr; and his brother Leonard (Sharron) Schaffer.
