Margaret A. Hopper

Margaret A. Hopper
Date of Birth: July 19, 1922
Died on: May 04, 2020

Margaret Ann Hopper, 97, of Aberdeen, passed away Monday, May 4, 2020, at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.

Margaret Ann (Heisinger) Hopper was born July 19, 1922, to Herman and Lena (Thury) Heisinger in Parkston, SD.  Parkston is the area where she was raised and attended school. She was the second child of 9 children.

At a young age, Margaret moved to Oregon during World War II to work in the shipyards.  She later moved to Minneapolis, MN, where she was employed at various jobs before returning home to Tripp.  It was in Parkston where she met her special love, Ervin Hopper.

Margaret and Ervin were united in marriage on February 9, 1949, at Parkston, SD.  The couple and children lived in Sioux City, IA, before moving to Aberdeen in 1968.  While living in Aberdeen, Margaret was employed as a unit secretary, EKG Technician and Pharmacy aide at St. Luke’s Hospital for 25 years.  Ervin and Margaret then moved to Milbank, SD, and Margaret worked an additional eight years at the Milbank Area Hospital.  Upon returning to Aberdeen, Margaret began volunteering with the Head Start Program as a Foster Grandparent and she remained with them for several years.  She and Ervin shared 45 years of marriage before he passed away in October, 1994.  Margaret continued to make Aberdeen her home until the time of her death.

In her spare time, Margaret enjoyed volunteering at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.  She also enjoyed walking, reading, and crocheting.  Margaret made many sacrifices in order for all her children to receive a Catholic High School education.  She was an amazing cook and she always looked forward to her and Tom’s weekly Sunday supper. Margaret fulfilled her role as a mother.  During the last month of her life, her strong independence had to allow for her daughter, sons, and daughter-in-law to take care of her.

Margaret was very active and she lived in her own residence until two months ago.  Her strong, deep, private faith helped her through life’s storms and sorrows.  Blessed be her memory.

Grateful to have shared in Margaret’s life are her children:  Michael (Barbara) Hopper of Aberdeen; Tom Hopper of Aberdeen; and Patty Jo Ann (Hopper) Brungardt of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters:  Mary Forney of Missouri City, Texas and Phyllis Bacon of California; many nieces and nephews; and numerous grand-dogs.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ervin (1994); son, Larry (2008); daughter, Pamela (2017); four brothers:  Lawrence, Leo, Paul, and Joseph Heisinger; and two sisters, Patricia and Regina.
