Ray W. Rystrom, 91, Aberdeen died Wednesday, April 4, at ManorCare Health Services, Aberdeen.

Ray Wesley Rystrom was born on January 3, 1927, at Frederick, SD to John Wesley and Edna Pearl (Fosdick) Rystrom. He graduated from Barnard High School with the Class of 1944, and on October 2, 1946, he enlisted in the US Army. He received his honorable discharge on March 24, 1948.

On October 3, 1948, he married Geraldine “Gerry” Whitson at Barnard. They made their home on a farm east of Barnard until June of 1965, when they moved to a farm south of Westport. Ray worked for Brick Propane and later for Hub City Iron where he worked until he retired. Gerry died on December 8, 2016, at Westport. Ray continued to live on the farm until 2015, when he moved to ManorCare Health Services.

Ray was a member at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Columbia. He was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, Machinists Union, Lodge 862.

Ray enjoyed playing pool, throwing horseshoes and hunting but loved watching his children and grandchildren participating in their softball activites.

Grateful for having shared Ray’s life are his children: Michael W. Rystrom, Sr. (Melissa Anderson), Westport, SD, Glen A. Rystrom, Westport, SD, Pamela R. (Stephen) Gass, Wisconsin, Toni (Joseph) Laska, Sheridan, IL, and Holly (James) Zimmerman, Vermillion, SD; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, sister, Dottie Madrigal, Tacoma, WA.

Preceding Ray in death are his wife, Geraldine “Gerry” Rystrom, parents, John and Edna Rystrom, daughter, Brenda May; grandson, Jamie Gunderson; great-granddaughter, Kinleigh Fristed; siblings: Art Rystrom, Irma Phelps, Fern Schlenker, Ruth Schlenker, Parl Rystrom, Burt Rystrom, Leo Rystrom.
